Maximizing the Vase Life of Your Cut Dahlias

Below are recommendations we give our customers to best enjoy their dahlias once they are removed from the plant. We know there are lots of systems and high quality research into cut flower longevity. What we have found is that cleanliness and constant emersion in water go a long way with dahlias.

Cut your dahlias early in the morning before the sun warms the blooms. The evening is OK if the temperature drops.

Transfer the cut stems directly into a clean, water containing tub or bucket. Dahlias don't like to be out of water. Make sure your bucket or tub is clean.

Create a bouquet in a clean vase containing clean water.

Trim the stems 1/2-1 inch if they were out of water for more than a minute.

Remove all leaves that are below the water level in your vase.

Re-cut the stems 1/2-1 inch and change the water in the vase every other day.

Display your vase of dahlias out of direct sunlight and in a cool part of the house or office.

Remove withered or discolored petals from individual blooms daily.

Wash your vase thoroughly every time you use it for a new bouquet.

Enjoy your dahlias!!
