What is eating my plant

This is my first try at dahlias. I ordered a few recommended for the heat/south and planted them in large pots, directly against my 6 ft privacy fence. They are about 3 ft tall and one variety has buds. The last few nights, something is decimating them, starting from the bottom going up. The leaves don't have holes. They are almost completely gone. Even the stem where it is connected to the main stalk is broken in places. I live in town and the neighbor's dog stays out at night opposite my plants. I put out little bowls of beer and crumpled newspaper. Didn't catch any slugs, but not sure about the earwig thing. I checked at 6:30 this morning and nothing was in the newspaper, but maybe I didn't "trap" correctly. I don't think it is a bug because of the broken stems. There were three different varieties, two of which were obviously the tastiest. The last plant is missing a few leaves at the bottom this morning. Any ideas?

My son moved one pot to my deck (2nd story) and still, more damage last night. I have seen a large mouse or rat in my birdfeeder on the deck. Tonight I am baiting a rat trap and I am putting glue traps at the base of the surviving plant. Whatever it is, it left some buds at the top of one plant by the fence. This is so disappointing. I hope I catch somthing tonight!

I don't think it's a rat. Where do you live, pbarky? If you live near in a lake or a river, it could be a beaver. They like dahlias as much as I am. You could use some readings below of the common causes of dahlia diseases.
