late plantings

i have a question, i have never done dahlias from tubers before, but i saw a bag on sale of 10 for $2.88 and couldnt pass that up! So I got a few bags, lol. I put them in the ground the last week of June, I have growth already, some already about 5", supposed to grow to 3.5'. Was this too late, will i get blooms? Also, If I dont want to dig up all 30 in the fall, what can i do to protect them in the ground? I have never brought in any of my glads and they come back fine, i never even mulch. but since the dahlias arent as deep in the ground i am scared to leave them in. Should I cut them back and cover with plastic maybe? Could I cover them with a few inches of mulch and take it off in the spring? Help me! What can I do?? If it matters, The types I have are:

How cold does it get where you are? How deep does the ground freeze? If the tubers freeze at all they will rot. I leave mine in the ground here but I cover them with about 6"of straw. We had an abnormal cold spell with temperatures in the low 20's, maybe down to 18 degrees last winter. I lost some of the ones I had moved in the autumn, because there was no pile of tubers on the top to protect lower ones. The ones I left in place, I lost only a few and that could have been voles eating the tubers from the evidence.

I think you will get atleast a few blooms from your new dahlias before frost...enough to see how you like them.
