True black dahlia?

I bought a new release this year from Dan's Dahlias by the name of "Verrone's Obsidian" which is a wonderful little orchid dahlia which produces blooms that are pretty much black. After about a week in the sun all day the blooms will slowly fade to a pretty dark red. I wonder what color the ADS will classify this one under.

Also the tuber I had has grown faster than any of my other plants and was the first to bloom even though it had a later start than most of my tubers. I'm impressed with this one.

This is not the first truly black dahlia. Ginger Clack of Clack's dahlias released a black one a few years ago. I have seen both in person and they are the same color. Here is link to an article about hers:

It should be noted that black dahlias need to be grown in full sun as they develop their black pigment in sunlight. They will only be dark red in shade and part shade. After they are about 3/4ths ripe they can be picked or shaded so that the black does not fade in the sunlight.

I had an "Ebony Star" this year. Unfortunately, it didn't make it . . . Dang.

I did happen to see Ebony Star for sale earlier this year but didn't jump on buying it right away and it quickly sold out. I didn't know Ginger Clack had hybridized that particular one though. That's pretty cool though, I enjoy buying tubers from her. I'll have to keep an eye peeled for Ebony Star for next year.
