wintering in pots

If I was wintering some of my dahlias that are in pots in my garage (doesnt freeze) Would I cut them off to the soil ? or leave the stems up afew inches. I think I understand you can do this maybe for a year. Eventually I realize you have to divide the tubers. Just bring them out in the spring and start watering when they poke up. Thank you

If the tubers are buried a few inches deep, you can cut very near ground level.

Just let the soil dry thoroughly before storage so the tubers won't rot.
