Dahlia Blooms are Failing!

This is my fourth year of growing dahlias. Every year I notice that the majority of my buds seem to rot before they even have a chance to bloom. If I pull one of the failed blooms apart they are rather spongy and have an offensive odor. The only thing that I can think of is that some bug is laying eggs in the bud and the offspring is eating the bud from the inside. Has anyone seen this before? Does anyone have any suggestions how to prevent this in the future? Much appreciated!

Here's an article on Botrytis which can also affect dahlia buds. Scanning it quickly i didn't see mention of foul odor, but I imagine anyting rotting can have some odor.

Have you had too much rain? I'm in NE Illinois, we've had so much rain that I have lots of things with moldy or rotting buds. See if other things are rotting besides the dahlias.

I have to ask the same question as linnea56.....have you had a lot of rain out there? That could be the culprit.
