Newly aquired tubers -- Plant or Store?

Posted by rockyridge z7b-8a NC (My Page) on

Hello, I just received some Dahlia tubers in a round robin trade. I thought I'd come to the experts for a little advice.

I know they are supposed to be planted in the spring; but is it too late now? We have about 3 months worth of warm weather here....usually. This year's weather has been so crazy who knows. Last year the first killing freeze that knocked my Brugs down was Dec. 7.

If I should store them till spring, how do I do that?

Also, can Dahlias stay in the ground in this zone or must they be dug up and stored? I live on the highest ridge in the county and have a little microclimate going on here. Stays warmer than surrounding areas.

Any thoughts you have will be appreciated.

Thanx

Roxanne

First of all I would like to say that your dogs are beautiful!!! I enjoyed looking at all your flowers too. You certainly have a green thumb. If I were you I would plant the Dahlias and leave them in the ground. But I'm not sure exactly where you are located. I am in zone 8 and they would be fine if left in the ground here on the west coast of Canada.

Thank you for your response. I guess I'll try them in the garden. I am not sure if they are viable anyway. I can't see any 'eyes' on any of them. Not sure if the person who gave them to me knew to look for them. If they don't make it I'll definitely be looking for some in the spring. I've been looking at pictures; I never knew how gorgeous Dahlias were before!!!

I'm glad you like my puppies; they are my joy.
