why no fertilizing after august?

I've heard and read alot about not fertilizing dahlias after the end of august. Is this to allow existing buds to grow and mature before frost without encouraging new bud formation to interfere with the growth of existing ones? Or is it for a different reason?

Yes, and I also believe that it triggers something in the plant to let it know that the season to close down is coming. I feel that it gives the plant a chance to get any unnatural chemicals out of its system so that it can properly prepare for the long winter's sleep. It works for me, so I do it.LOL

I had always heard it had to do with discouraging tuber rot, forgot the details so I'm done with N for this year now too.

The tuber rot thing is interesting, I'll have to look up some more stuff on that.
