They are the broken stems that are really too short to stay in a vase. Anyway, I liked the idea. I will have to do another today at they get really messy in two days.

There are a lot of dahlias being picked here today, as we are expecting 1 degree C tonight. I guess the party is over. Maybe I can cover some, but I fear that most will be lost.

Do you use a metal flower frog? I have some plants that always have such short stems. The frogs let you put themn in to just about any container, bowl or vase.

Lovely photo PD. Yes, Alyrics is right. A flower frog will allow you to place the short stems in a shallow amount of water and then you won't have the problem of the flower petals going 'slimy' in a day or two. However, if your just looking for a quick centerpiece...you can always do the 'float' method ...
