| For fun, I've decided to try and save some seeds from my dahlias this year. I know they won't come true to the plants I've harvested them from, but that's the part I'm looking forward to. It'll be a fun surprise to see what blooms.
Now here is the part I'm unsure of: I opened a few spent blooms to harvest the seeds and I know for sure I have a few viable seeds, but I have quite a few seeds that are smaller and seem far less developed. Will these smaller seeds even germinate? Or just go ahead and toss the little guys in the trash? |

| Dahlia seeds go through stages of development that can be seen in their color. They go from green, to white to gray to dark gray and finally black. The fatter seeds that have a "baby bump" in them are the most likely to sprout. However, if you get some seeds from some varieties that do not make very many seeds, keep them all as even some of least likely candidates will sprout. Dahlia breeders go through great effort to get seeds from some varieties and would never throw away a seed because that may be the only one to sprout. If a variety makes a bazillion seeds for you, certainly you can sort them into the darkest black, fat seeds and toss the rest. |

| Thanks for the info, teddahlia. I'll take your advice and plant anything that looks like a seed and be happy with whatever comes up! |
