My mother-in-law has a large pink dahlia at the corner of her porch. It is in a protected spot and has not been dug in the twenty-two years I've been married to he daughter, in spite of the fact that she lives in central Indiana (Zone 5).

Last spring I too a cutting from it, brought it home, and rooted it, thinking I'd surprise her with another plant like the one she has. It rooted easily and I set it out in my garden. I did not allow it to bloom, since I was more concerned with it building up a good root system this year. It didn't get very big, but we had an extremely hot dry summer. It was bushy and two or three feet tall.

When I dug it this week there was a cluster of roots at the base of what was once the cutting, but no tubers at all. Is it possible that this tuberless root will "Keep" over the winter?
