I dug my dahlias yesterday and had a couple of strange happenings. One I dug had no tubers at all but the original, which was split and rotten. It had a few roots, but not many. One other had the original tuber huge, yellow and looked like pictures of brains. so help me it was bright yellow. Also when you have a new dahlia and it dosn't look like the picture when it blooms, do you try one more year or just get rid of it right away?

1) I imagine that there actually were tubers, but they got broken off when you dug,- that is assuming that it was a healthy plant. I did have a couple that started off well, and then died, and they had no tuber.

2) I always cut off the original "mother" tuber, and only keep the new healthy firm ones with no wrinkles.

3) "Also when you have a new dahlia and it dosn't look like the picture when it blooms, do you try one more year or just get rid of it right away?". I am assuming that you mean the flower. Sometimes, tubers get mixed up. I gave my neighbour a beautiful white tuber last spring as that is what she asked for. It grew, but was certainly not white. It turned out to be a gorgeous red, prolific bloomer. Somehow the label got mixed. I have purchased dahlias and the tubers were not what they were supposed to be. It happens once in a while. What I would do though, is plant the tuber next year, and enjoy the flower. If you don't like it, yank and compost it, or give it to a friend ... in exchange for something you might want, of course. ;-)

I've had a couple plants over the years grow on nothing but the mother tuber and a few spindly roots trying to be tubers, but no where close to developed. So that can happen, don't know why. They grew like normal, full size dahlias, just no tuber production.

Flowergirl, I've never seen a bright yellow tuber but did the 'brains' look anything like this? This is crown gall, I believe, and all tubers should be destroyed so it doesn't spread.

I had one that had the crown gall this year. It was put into the trash.

A good camera with MACRO capabilities is a wonderful investment for good photos.

The one that made no new tubers was Myrtles Folly and it was puny all year, a new one tho. I dug in the hole but couldn't find any broken off. The brain tuber was huge and bright yellow, filled my hand and I have big hands. It didn't look like your picture. The one that didn't bloom right was supposed to be Sonic Bloom, but looked nothing like the picture.
Now I have another dilema, the tubers I dug from all my new plants are shriveling up. I have sprayed them with water, but they don't plump up. wondering what I did wrong? We had a hard freeze, and I waited a week to dig. The older plants, in the ground for 2 years are nice and plump. I'm baffeled. Any ideas??
