dahlia cuttings

Hi everyone,

I rooted about 50 dahlia cuttings in water about 5 weeks ago. About 90 percent of them have some white spongy substance on the stems (the part that is in contact with water). Few of the cuttings have developed some nice long roots.

Does anyone know what is this white substance? Is it some kind of fungus? If so, if I planted these cuttings in the garden next year, will they spread the disease to other healthy dahlia plants?

Thank you ever so much

I canot comment on the white stuff on your cuttings, I would like to know why you are doing your cuttings in water instead of using rooting hormone and soil.? I am intending to increase my stock by cuttings also.
