| Hello .. A new member here, and my first season lifting and storing dahlia tubers
Lifted clumps late afternoon Sunday last (Nov 11th). Ground was both somewhat hard packed and slightly wet (clay). Was afraid of damaging tuers if I tried to do too much cleaning, so I let them dry in basement over work week. This past Saturday (Nov 17th) I cleaned each tuber, but kept them in clumps so as to easily identify next spring. Packed each in a barrel seperated by layers of peat. Barrel will be in dark part of basement over winter .. here's question and, as I see it, a problem. Baement will stay high 40s most of winter, but Nebraska winters are very dry .. basement has no humidifer so humidity will probably be in the high teens or low twenties by mid winter. Will tubers get too dry? If so, should I (a) figure out a way to humidify barrel(like a cigar humidor) or should I unpack and put each in a plastic bag? Any / all suggestions appreciated. |

| Hi Nebraska. I still store some of mine in big plastic boxes full of peat. What I do is fill the box about 1/2 full and add some water sprinkled over the surface with a watering can. Then again when full. Not a soaking but maybe a quart. The only problem I have with this, my tubers seem to want to sprout awfully early. Which doesn't really hurt anything.
