Question about reproduction

Hi. I had a large dahlia plant fall over this year in about June. I topped it and stuck the top in the ground and it made a bush. I dont think it flowered. I have not pulled it up. Does it form a tuber, and if so, does that tuber form a flowering stem? I have not done much with dahlias. I am learning how to handle the tubers now that the season is getting over. Do they reproduce from just stems? Thank you. Mary in New Jersey.

RE: Question about reproduction

Sounds like you did a successful garden cutting! Congrats!

Dahlias have the ability to put out roots at every leaf junction, given the right conditions. Tubers are essentially swollen roots, so you may very well have tubers under that cutting. Problem is that they might not be mature yet, and young tubers tend to not store well. Only one way to find out... Dig it up!

It would most certainly have flowered given another month under a warm sun. Some dahlia vendors, especially in the UK, only sell cuttings. Growers in the UK laugh at us Americans and our 'chicken leg' tubers.
