When to dig and divide dahlias in the South

My dahlias have been in the ground several years without dividing. I am wondering if I should dig them now, divide them, and then replant them. Or should I just wait until next spring to do it. I am in zone 7 in north Georgia. They have just recently been killed back by frost. Thanks for the info.
