Storing Dahlias in clumps

HELP! This is my second year growing dahlias. I have already dug, divided, treated them with sulphur/vermeculite mixture, wrapped them. I bought a new variety this year, Master David's Choice. I wanted this one because I had a son named David who died in 1980 and when I saw the name on this one, I had to have it. I am so sad because when I dug it up, the tubers look really odd. I couldn't really tell where the neck or crown was. I cut it so there was 6" of stem, but the crown seems to be in the wrong place. Anyway, I was wondering if I could just store the small clump by itself and seeif next spring there would be some eyes. Could I just put some vermeculite in a ziplock bag and store it that way? I don't want to try and divide it since I can't tell where the crown is. Any assistance would be so great!!
