| HELP! This is my second year growing dahlias. I have already dug, divided, treated them with sulphur/vermeculite mixture, wrapped them. I bought a new variety this year, Master David's Choice. I wanted this one because I had a son named David who died in 1980 and when I saw the name on this one, I had to have it. I am so sad because when I dug it up, the tubers look really odd. I couldn't really tell where the neck or crown was. I cut it so there was 6" of stem, but the crown seems to be in the wrong place. Anyway, I was wondering if I could just store the small clump by itself and seeif next spring there would be some eyes. Could I just put some vermeculite in a ziplock bag and store it that way? I don't want to try and divide it since I can't tell where the crown is. Any assistance would be so great!! |

| Of course, you can store it whole. I'd cut off most of the stem remaining, let the cut dry and cover the clump in vermiculite or shavings in a frost-free place for the winter. In the spring, see where the growth starts and you may be able to chop it in half, quarters or such then. Or you may want to leave it whole for another season if it's just too 'iffy' to divide. Sorry to hear about the loss of your son. Makes the flower that much more special. There's another one you might want to look into: Clearview David. A spectacular flower!

| Also my regrets about your son and I laud your way of paying tribute to him. I have very successfully over-wintered clumps however clumsy they are. I have not even used vermiculite thus far (although I have a friend who stores her clumps in shredded leaves). I second Poochellas' suggestion that you can always wait for sprouts to form in the spring and divide in half or whatever depending on what sprouts. So much easier! ML |

| Just wanted to say "thanks" to both Poochella and Misslucinda for replying to my post. I decided to go ahead and store the clump in a plastic bag with some vermeculite, per Poochellas' advice. Also the photo you posted of the Clearview David was beautiful. I will have to order one for next year. I had planted one that looked similar, it was called Seduction but unfortunately it got some kind of disease where the bottom of the stalk got black and mushy. I cut it off and hoped that when I dug them up, I would be able to at least have some tubers, but there were none. The whole plant was a loss. Oh well, you win some, you lose some I am learning, the hard way. |
