Where to buy? How to choose?

I grew a few unnamed varities this year for the first time. I looked up the list of suppliers on dahlia.net and there are so many! It seems like on the other forums there is a consensus for which is the major supplier to use, like John Scheepers for bulbs, etc. Does that hold true for dahlias? I'm not a fanatic (yet...)

If I only want a few, and don't need the biggest, latest and best varieties, where do I go? I love the collarettes but it seems no one much cares about those. I can't spend too much, either: I'm already way over budget with getting a new garden up and running as it is. (I'm already hiding tulips from my husband.) I had hopes for the exchange page, but that seems not to have come about in time. (Probably no one would want the ones I have, anyway...)

So where do I go? I feel like Scarlett O'Hara, "Oh, Rhett, where shall I go? What shall I do?" Someone point me to Tara!

I have not ordered any online, but will this year. Dan's,Swan Island, Connell's are mentioned a lot. Park's and Burpee's also sell them. I actually buy a lot of mine at Stein's(WI chain) early in summer for 75% off. There are other places that also sell them on sale. I got even got some at Walgreen's (Kelvin Floodlight and Arabian Night) last year for 1$. I feel that I have a nice variety of dahlias, but when I look at the A D society's top 50 list I only recognize a few of them. You'll build up a trading stock in no time I bet.

John Scheepers doesn not work with summer bulbs, Van Dycks does and usually they have good "common" varieties. If you want more specialized varieties you have to contact a professional grower. Dahlia net has a list of growers.

Al, where is Stein's? I'm in SE Wisconsin a lot. Is "Parks's" the Park seed company, or the grower in the dahlia list?

Stein's are in the Milwaukee area, 3 or 4 locations I think. If you can't find any info I can check in their ads. I am in the Fox Valley(not the imitation Fox r. in IL). I usually go in early in the season to see what they have and then come back when they go on sale. Yes, Parks is Parks - I have not ordered dahlia from them yet.

Why not wait for the exchange list to be put on. No one will ship them until spring anyway. Spring is the time for shipping, and then there will be people offering bulbs on the exchange. I myself will have some to give away for stamps, if my health holds up.

I keep looking for the exchange, to see if it's up yet. I look for it right on this forum, correct? So you think people will post what they have in the spring?

I think this link is where to watch for a separate dahlia exchange, at least that's where I'm watching.

I will post any extras I have that survive storage and show signs of life in early April. But I will say that I am pretty well obligated for tubers right now. I will probably have a few extras.

It was a funny year, some of my previously great donors were scant for tuber production this year, and some were more plentiful than past years. Everyone in the NW of the US have said time and again what a weird year it was for dahlias.

Here is a link that might be useful: Exchange pages

RE: Where to buy? How to choose?

In our area - everyone would tell you Swan Island Dahlia farms. If you have a local dahlia Society - look for their web Site - since you might buy the offspring of past year winners at their Spring & Fall Sales.

You can also see if there is a local or area Garden Exchange page here, and post pix of your babies -
asking for a spud Trade.

Perhaps offer in a Forum to pay postage to anyone who can send several in a Free US Priority Mail box. These Swaps/gifts would probably also be completed in March or April.

I'd be willing to do a USPS Priority Mail Box - if you want to send Postage via Paypal...or send a USPS label in the mail. But - it's better to get them from someone with more experience, probably. This is my first year cutting and storing - and it has been a real...adventure.

I have lots of super skinny, and tubers with damaged parts, like_wry-neck_, or tiny/no stem-chunk, so all these may not form eyes. ACK! I hate to throw them all away - what if one wants to live?? If someone has time and planting space to nurture/experiment with these - I'd be happy to label and send 'em on. If even one lived - a new generation of Tubers will result, so I hope someone can do this.

(Perhaps prove their ability to sprout in Pots - before committing space in the garden?)
