Question on moving clematis

Has anyone ever moved an established (3 years) clematis and had success? I tried to move one old clematis during a drought one year and it died immediately.

I planted four clematis at the base of a windmill I showed when I posted the Scotch Broom picture. Of course I planted the SB too close (or the darn thing grew too much) and now I have to keep untangling two of them from the SB. The two clematis on the opposite side are doing great and can live there, the other two must be moved or they will eventually disappear or drag the SB foliage down.

TIA - Brooke
