Hi Brooke -- We moved a fence last year (August or September) and I had to move six clematis growing on the fence. The only one I lost was an enormous Sweet Autumn Clematis that was evidently too big to move. I may have been lucky, but all I did was fill the new hole with lots of good stuff before moving the plant, and watered the heck out of them every day for the first week. They're a little stumpy this year, but they're blooming!

Thanks Chris - the rootball should be small and hopefully give me no problem. Ellie also told me how and I actually remember what she said. They get moved as soon as they quit blooming.

Hi Brooke: My sister moved what looked like a Nelly Moser clematis a couple years ago. It was well established in that she owned the house for three years and it had been planted some years before that. It moved from VA to SC without a hitch.

Okay Brooke - what were the instructions Ellie gave you on moving the clematis? I have two that need to be moved this year but I have been hesitant to do so.

By the way, we finally got a "smidgen" of rain (0.40 inches).

Hi Mary - Ellie's response got eaten by whatever was causing the problems the other day with the GW.

The response was very similar to Chris' response - dig a big rootball, dig a bigger hole at new location, water the hole, plant the rootball,rewater, then mulch. Try not to expose the roots to air.
