Earliest flowering daylily?

I have a few daylilies but all mine flower starting mid June. Are there any that flower earlier than that? It would be nice to have them flowering earlier. I've never heard of any that flower in spring but early summer would be a nice addition to my garden. Thanks. Marg

Thanks for the list Joe. I'll look them up to see how many I want. The January thaw is definitely here. The weather is very mild here today, +2 degrees. It's supposed to get colder next week tho. Thanks again. Marg

The early species don't last too long but they start my season. H minor, middendorfs, the lemon lily, another I can never spell, probably Gold Dust, Orangeman, Apricot and some others are hybrids of the early blooming species but you may have to go back to Yeld and Stout to find out what the parents are. My H minor crosses with middendorfs and I have all sorts of yellow and orange seedlings but they have very few flowers in little bunches on the scapes. But by late May I just want to see daylilies bblooming so if they only bloom for two weeks until some of the later ones start I'm happy------------Weedy

Weedy: thanks for the info. Dani: I don't usually go for yellows but that one is gorgeous! Love the slight ruffling on the petals. Thanks. Joe: I looked up the ones on your list and found a few I really like. Thanks. Marg

Thanks for the lists, I'm a little more interested in late bloomers but as I have a few the Extra Earlies should be a consideration worthy of pursuit. ~Wes

My earliest one is an orange-yellow called 'Springsyde'. It used to be sold in Canada by Sheridan Nursery.

I forgot to mention that I have Pennysworth and Bitsy, but they are not Extra Early for me. Springsyde blooms well before these two. I recently bought Orangeman, but it hasn't bloomed yet, so I can't say when it usually blooms here.

| BJ Crichton's STELLA'S RUFFLED FINGERS not only is an early season bloomer, but it reblooms and reblooms. It was one of the longest bloomers in my garden last season. A great little bloomer, and it's not yellow!

Oldies----I think Saxtons, Anilum, Spring Purple (which always tends to burn in ,the sun for me)Winsome an old Yeld daylily that is pale yellow and very fragrant, Buckeye, but these are all very old fashioned daylilies so if you like modern forms you might not like them.--------------------Weedy

| Our season is much shorter than a lot of them, and I have a couple that are just starting at the very end of May. I have a very old yellow that I have no idea what it is (probably a species) but it is the first to bloom for me, is wonderfully fragrant, and adds a glorious splash of color to the spring landscape.
It is quickly followed by Saratoga Springtime and Swirling Spider, and then the trickle turns into a flood! |

Dani, I think you may be right with MIGNON! I knew it was an older variety (Mom brought it with her when we moved to the PNW from MN 30 years ago, and that was before she was as meticulous about documenting her plants. It would be really nice to put a name with it! Thanks!

I thought I had a picture of Dumortieri, but apparently I deleted it. Not a gorgeous daylily, kind of yellow/gold trumpet shape with orange striping on the back of the flower, but very early for me. I don't have many really early daylilies, but Dumortieri bloomed April 28 last year. The next one to bloom is Stella d'oro, I didn't bother writing down when it blooms, but Dumortieri is usually finishing its bloom when Stella starts. The first one I noted after Dumortieri is Stella Supreme on May 25. Dumortieri is a good increaser & heavy bloomer while in bloom, but no rebloom. I'm always so happy to see those first blooms!

ngraham - I found a pic on Dave's Garden. I think that one is great. Look at the no. of buds! I like the way the buds are burgundy and open to a soft yellow. Going to have to look for it here. Thanks for posting. Marg

My earliest daylilies are Stella De Oro, which starts in May, and Happy Returns, which starts 2 weeks later than Stella. All the rest of my daylilies start in July, beginning with Jolyene Nichole. I bought Becky Lynn last year because it was listed as an EE, but a lot of people say it doesn't bloom early for them. I really love dreamingdaylilies' picture of Early Elegance, but the link leads to an Upload Image page on TinyPic. And I'll have to look up the daylilies from Joe's list. There was an article on northern EE daylilies in the Daylily Journal. I'll see if I can find a link to it online. Here it is: http://huben.us/daylily/ExtendingPart1.pdf Part 2 is also online and talks about bud builders and rebloomers. Sharon
