Fall bloomers?

Hello, everyone. I have some daylillies, including one called "August Flame" (I think that's right) bur have been unable to find any more like it, and I would like some daylillies that bloom in the fall. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Brandyray |

| Here is a post from last fall that may give you some ideas. Vickie |

| Autumn Accent is an oldie that I crossed with August Flame and got a bunch of orange-red seedlings. I have old autumn Prince and Autumn King both of which I think are old Stout daylilies. Ollalie daylilies has a lot of both extra early and extra late------------------Weedy |

Thank you, Vicki, and Weedy. That is quite an extensive list, Vicki. As for Ollalie, I had never heard of them, but I found the website w/ no difficulty, only they are rather expensive... I did see several of the late bloomers that were striking, though. Thank you, both. Brandyray |

| My only late bloomers are Frans Hals and a NOID (possibly Hemerocallis citrina var. vespertina from looking over/comparing data on Ollalie's site). I've never ordered from the place in my link but they do have a nice break-down from EE to VL but bear in mind they're in CT. For an example they list 'Chicago Apache' as very late, for me in Ohio it's more what I'd consider a ML. It comes on just a tad behind most of my others and hangs on for a long time but I definitely don't consider it a late bloomer. Worth checking for ideas though, if nothing else. ~Wes |

That's an interesting point, Wes, that what is late in one area may be earlier in another. I have ordered several lilies from Gilbert H. Wild (prices are good and I have been happy w/ their bulbs). They are in Missouri- so will they bloom earlier, the same or later here? And how do you like Chicago Apache? I have been considering that one the last 2 times I ordered... I ordered American Revolution, Fire King, Frans Hals (great price on those), Hyperion, Pardon Me, Rocket City, Route 66, & Sea Gold. Almost all of them are listed as Mid. I really need to do better at keeping track of which ones bloom when so I can figure out what I need to get next yr. I am tempted to order several items from Brent & Beckys, too. Oh, this is a dangerous time of year for my pocket book! (By the way, while I am dreaming of spring and flowers in bloom, we have a mix of ice and snow outside- a fairly rare occurrence here.) | Brandyray, no clue with the lily bulbs as I've only grown small bulbs planted in spring which produced mediocre blooms late in the season (fingers crossed for better results this year). As for 'Chicago Apache"? I wasn't terribly impressed the first year but it's turned out to be a great performer and puts on a nice, long show. It seems to multiply quickly, has stout scapes that stand straight up and down and pretty high bud count that keeps those scarlet blooms coming for weeks. Now 'Frans Hals' I would have never picked from a catalog but it's nice to have a daylily loading up with buds as the bulk are winding down (or finished). Most attractive from a distance to me but it seems to be a pretty popular variety. Of the others you listed I have 'Pardon Me', it's a nice no-frills daylily. Seems to increase quickly and mine's quite the prolific bloomer earlier in the season (I get a weak fall rebloom but it's in a shade bed for now). I picked up 'Route Sixty-Six' last year, no idea how the mature plant behaves but the color sold me, far different in both form and color than my other reds. Pretty sure I'm gonna like it though. I certainly understand the "winter blues", we've been hit pretty hard this year but it could be much worse. Wishful thinking but perhaps next month will be better? At any rate we've got the internet where everything blooms year-round. ~Wes |

| Brandyray, Late is relative to your climate. In most cases lates would only get YOU to mid summer. To go later than that you would need rebloomers. Some will keep reblooming until frost. I am MUCH farther north than you are and lates take me to the end of August. Any september bloom is rebloom. NewyorkRita has some Ollalie daylilies. Hopefully she will chime in on when they start to bloom in her New York garden. Edward Nova Scotia |

| Thank you, Edward. I do have some rebloomers, and some of the new ones I just ordered are also rebloomers. Brandyray |

Last year in the fall (late august) I went to my daylily nursery to see what was blooming. I can only remember the ones I bought which were: Red Ripple (scapes into frost! around October) August Frost El Desperado. There was one more (sry I can't remember the name), the flower was lovely but the foliage was so coarse I had a hard time deciding if I should get it or not. In the end I decided to leave it since I would forever look at it in my garden and think, "what butt-ugly leaves". |
