first time crossing

Hi everyone, as a newbie I will cross my first daylilies soon :) I guess a question that I would love to be clarified is...When crossing, I have read that if a particular flower is not as good as it usually is, dont use it. Does it matter the quality of the flower (not plant itself) when making crosses?

I know there can be some fluctuation from flower to flower; does this mean that each flower is offering slightly different genetics?

Thanks! Dave
