First Daylily Blooms on Long Island

First flower opened today to start the season off, Saratoga Springtime. It's loaded with buds just bursting to bloom. Esperanza Lemon Crisp daylily is also in bloom, but just one scape is blooming, the other scapes will be ready to be in full bloom within the week, as well as a very early unidentified red I have planted in several places in my yard. My stellas are loaded with large scapes, I'll give it another week and a half for full bloom to set in. Need to check around for more. This is a first for me here, never had these blooms until way after Memorial Day. Some years, they are just beginning right before July 1st. Also, never had my roses blooming at the same time as my Roadies! There's some type of little green worm (looks like an inch worm but it isn't) that's taking large chunks out of many of my perennials that have never been touched before by anything. Looks like it's going to be an interesting year all around. Can't believe the size of all my hostas!! Huge!!! Andrea

Excellent! More pictures soon. It has been that kind of year here too. Need pics.

Same here, I don't usually have blooms til the last week in May, but I have scattered blooms already. My hostas were huge & looked wonderful til we had a frost, not so pretty now.

Congrats on your scapes and soon to be daylily blooms. Of course, I read this and I had to go out right away and check my Saratoga Springtime and yes, mine has scapes also. Not very tall yet, not over the folliage so that is why I didn't see them until I actually went searching for them. And all this rain is making the daylily folliage tall this year!

Rita...Of course I knew you would just have to go out and check on your daylilies, esp. Saratoga Springtime...I had a little giggle when I was writing it because I could see in my mind's eye you running out of the house. I hope you didn't get wet! Giggle...Giggle.

Kay...I've been loving your pictures and all your enthusiasm this early spring. Alas, I'm pretty computer illiterate when it comes to pictures right at this moment and unfortunately my little old computer isn't called "last legs" for nothing ...which is why I'm usually just enjoying everybodies wonderful posts when I do get a chance and not speaking up toooo tooooo much. But, I knew I would get "caught" for pictures someday...was just biding my time! Well, I have good intentions, and when my schedule is a little less hectic here with work and Mr. Computer is having a nice day...I may just surprise all of you someday....but no promises...yet!

Ngraham...sorry about the hostas, I know when it comes to gardening, it certainly is a day by day experience, and nothing is for certain. Good ole Mother Nature! She keeps us hopping! Andrea
