Yes, is is thrip damage. Usually an insect spray will help, but once you see the damage, its too late to do anything. Spraying may help on rebloom. I've had a lot of damage even though I sprayed in January and February, which is SUPPOSED to work.
Go to a big box store and read labels and get one that lists thrips on the label. If you spray now before the buds open you will have little or no damage.
Interesting about thrips. I have roses and I have no thrips on my roses, believe me I would know. But apparently I have some here and there on the daylilies though not much. Anyone know if they would be a differnt kind of Thrip? That is my guess right now.
I don't know anything about the hole in the bud, that has never happened here.
But I have had those bumpy, pokey outty things on some of my buds and they opened perfectly without any damage. But, I did have Thrips...So, I don't really know if the thrips did it, or that was just how the bud was. Mostly, I noticed that thrips discolored my flowers and sucked the life out of my buds. Darned buggers! You'll know for sure if you get up close and personal to one of your daylily flowers. Try a yellow one, or one with a yellow throat - thrips seems to love those in my garden, and makes them easy to see. They are tiny and fast. Smaller than *!* Blow on the flower and you'll see them run.
I DO know spinosad works wonders. I got it at the local nursery - Fertilome has a product with it in it... Bagleaf, borer killer or something like that. Look at the active ingredients on the label. Most likely the bottle will not say "Spinosad" as the title of the product.
Rita - in my reading, there were references to a lot of different types of thrips. Seems like each one has a preference as to what they like to eat.
