My first daylily bloom of the year is always Dumortieri, before any others, even Stella, have sent up scapes. Dumortieri bloomed May 5 this year, usually it blooms in April. {{gwi:664400}}
aw that's wonderful nancy,That first bloom is always so exciting each year,I have a bunch of scapes and buds, but no blooms yet. Thanks for posting your lovely bloom.its so pretty.
Great. Looks like your season is starting. I think we will definitely be behind here for when I will see my first blooms. At least we are getting plenty of rain which helps with the weeding.
Hooray! I was out today & spotted the very beginnings of scaptes on Selma rose & Stella. Dumortieri is no fancy daylily, but it blooms for quite a while so very early. It is so simple, but rather charming too.
I like the earlies-maybe for the same reasons I like crocus and reticulata iris----I'm sick of winter. I have middendorfs, minor (two or three kinds), flava, dumortieri, and crosses every which way. Last year I finally managed to get seeds from H flava X minor (the real one???) but I have not planted them yet--must get at it but family illnesses and problems drive me up a tree. Old crosses are budding-I still have the old photos.
