My unscientific explanation .... I've had this occur here in south-central Ontario with a few (normally) late bloomers over the years. I believe what is taking place is that a later-than-normal scape is developing during the previous autumn - perhaps even a rebloom scape - and the onset of winter shuts the process down. The development is arrested at that time and it more-or-less goes into 'hibernation' (Dormancy) only to be stimulated into re-growth the next spring, resulting in unusual, uncharacteristic early bloom the following spring.

I'm from Ottawa as well and that is unusual isn't it? I'm finding everything in my garden is blooming even later than normal because of our very long winter this year. Love the colour of your daylily :)

Yes, gardenlou, very unusual. My first bloomer last year was July 1st. My irises and peonies are now in bloom. And the lilac are at their best.

How neat! An early blooming surprise like that in the garden is almost like getting an unexpected gift.
