Is it too late to split daylilies?

My common Stella de oro lilies have never been split. I'm new at this. They are a 5 years old? Long over due to split. They haven't bloomed yet, but close. Should I dig them up? I have two other lilies red in color that need split too. I know I should have done it already, but I'm afraid I'll kill them.

You won't kill them, I assure you! You may sacrifice some blooms and foliage this year, but daylilies can be split from spring to September in my zone 6 garden.

Thanks. I think I'll go for it. Here is a picture of them from last July (so I know they are overdue to divide).

How long after they are divided do I need to plant them?

When I divide I replant right away usually. But, I'd wait until they are done blooming, meanwhile looking where to plant them :)
