I was out weeding seedlings this morning and found one cross had 3 seedlings in a row that had blasted! Sounds to me like genetics plays a role and they are prone to it!

Mephistopheles parents are Strutter's Ball & Grand Masterpiece. I also have Strutters Ball and it has never blasted on me but I'll be watching to see if it ever does. Wonder if Grand Masterpiece ever does? Marg

Someone on one of the forums was writing about this recently as there is all kinds of suggestions as to reason and remedies and doesn't happen to everyone with the same daylily.

If I remember correctly, it has to do with the sudden uptake of water after a dry period thereby the cell walls of the scape will expand quickly and burst.

Some daylilies are very prone and I get rid of them. Others have it happen due to circumstances. Usually they are the ones with big fat scapes. My Ruby Border had a fat scape blast. I left it there, even though only a quarter of it was connected. It is blooming away, amazingly!

Thanks Kathy. I had read the AHS information but wondered if it was hereditary. I really like my Mephistopheles so I guess I will just see if it keeps happening. Marg

I just had a scape blast on my Apricot Jade. I've never had one on Mephistopholes. Certain cultivars are more susceptible.
