Finally Revealed

One day during the Fall, my fiance and I were driving down a back road when we saw a sign "Free daylilies." I told him to turn around and let's get some. After some convincing, I got my fiance to turn around and pull into the drive.

There were two or three large trash bags full of daylilies!!!! My fiance has never pulled over and gotten something from the curb of the road, so this was new to him. He asked me, "Do we go up to the door and tell them we are getting these plants?" I laughed and told him that they didn't want to be bothered (we still laugh at this. He felt like we were stealing even though there was a sign that said free!). We ended up putting one bag in the trunk.

This whole time, we have not known the type of daylilies we had nor the color. It has been fun to watch them grow taller and taller this season. Finally, a steam and buds formed. The buds remained pretty light and yellow. I assumed they would be some sort of yellow as most daylilies in our area are yellow. WOW... I was very surprised with these beauties!!!!!! They just might be the prettiest plants in my yard :)

Any ideas of what type these beauties could be? Thanks!

These look like Hemerocallis flore pleno... Similar to H. Kwanzo, but one I like better. Be aware it is an aggressive grower and will spread to the immediate area with rhizomes. Keep an eye on it or it may crowd its neighbors. Bob

Thanks, Bob! That info has greatly helped me. I will keep an eye on them and try my best to keep them under control. If they become a problem I have several spots I can move them to that can tolerate their spreading. I have a few homes already lined up when it comes time to divide them. LOL

I personally haven't had as much trouble with the flore pleno as I have with the Kwanzo. I know it is very common & seen on roadsides-although I've never seen the doubles like this growing on the side of the road-I secretly really like it :) Of all the nicer varieties I have in my garden, I think this is one of the prettiest.

ngraham, this is my first daylily and I am now hooked! I was pleasantly surprised when it didn't die back to the ground during the winter. I might have to find some more evergreen daylilies. I placed these in the garden along the middle section of the retaining wall, and it has added a little privacy until our shrubs fill out.
