I can't believe you have one blooming in the garden already as far north as your are. I just had my first garden bloom this past weekend. Scapes are much later here because of the long, cold winter. I love the intense colors on Lava Flow!

What a nice first bloom.I always say I don't like orange, but those are the ones that really catch the eye.

A very striking picture! Rita complained about the bud count on Lava Flow. Do the number of scapes make up for that?

We're in zone 6, south-central Indiana, on the western side of the state. This is our Lava Flow. It's ahead of everything in the yard except Moonlight Masquerade, which has been blooming for over a week.

Lava Flow is always very early for us, like in Cindy's garden, though it's registered as EM. It doesn't have a large number of buds and is not a really fast increaser, but it blooms so early and so beautifully it will always have a place in our garden. Hope to see it open in a week or so.

Also, of interest, it seems to pass its early blooming to its seedlings. In looking at our seedling beds, a large number of the ones with tall scapes about to bloom have Lava Flow as one parent.

Nice debut daylily! I don't grow Lava Flow but love the intense colors, especially at the beginning of the season.

Hoosier Bob - Lava Flow looks like it's going to have very decent bud count for you this year. It has better branching than almost anything in my rain starved garden this year.

Here is Rita's comment, but I think it may have performed better for her later: "Lava Flow is a poor bloomer in my garden. Each year it sends up scapes with 4 to 6 buds each. Never have I had more than 6, but it stays in my garden because of those stunning flowers."

Lava Flow is quite striking Cindy. No blooms here and I don't expect the season to get going for another few weeks. This winter and then the wet and cold spring didn't help.

Bob, that is one large clump of Lava Flow. Must be stunning when they all open.
