Daylilies not blooming this year

What could be the cause? Is it because they got crowded and require division? Can a daylily become crowded in just 3 years to the point of stopping blooming? Or could it be the harsh winter that killed flower buds? Or drought? Or something else?
These are the daylilies I am talking about - the picture is from the last summer when they were blooming just fine, as you can see, they had lots and lots of flowers... this year - just maybe a few flower stalks between 5 plants... So, I am not sure what to do: divide? fertilize? water? wait for the next year and see?
