I Am Excited

| I have finally decided to do something for myself. I have a list of 12 daylilies. A local daylily farm, Crochet's, has a 10 for $50 sale. They are all older cultivar's, but I think they are pretty. I picked 12 in case I need alternates. Here's the list:
Slender Lady
Handsome Ross Carter
Lord of Lightening
Maleny Debutante
Awesome Candy
Missouri Memories
Pink Embrace
Daring Dilemma
Ballyhoo
Brand New Lover
Delightsome
Masked Phanton
I am hoping they will let me pick them up so I don't have to pay postage.
I also have 7 other older daylilies picked out, 4 of which I would really like to have. Maybe I can swing them this spring. Excitement!!!!!!

| I only have Daring Dilemma and Masked Phanthom whick are both good choices. I would like Awesome Candy as I have a small colection of candies. I have Ceryy Candy and Peach Candy that I really like. That's of the older ones. I think you did well...Ellie |

| Did you see the photo of Ballyhoo today? It caught my attention! I would love to have that blooming in my garden. |
RE: I Am Excited

| I have Malaney Debutante. It is one of those "can't kill em" daylilies. Reblooms constantly and multiplies very fast. Quite pretty too!!! |

| I have Lord of Lightning. I like it but it sometimes doesn't want to open well after cold nights but you probably won't have that problem in Louisiana. It does melt a bit in hot weather. |
RE: I Am Excited

| I did see the picture of BallyHoo, it is a nice one. I will try to remember to plant Lord of Lightning in a little afternoon shade. Ellie, if you grow Candy's in Alabama, they should do good in Louisiana too. I hope so anyway. If anyone else has comments or pictures of these please chime in. This is a big investment for me and I want to make sure I am getting what will grow here. Sharon |

| The only one out of your list that I have is Missouri Memories. It is a wonderful daylily for me. Opens perfectly every day, the blooms are not affected by rain and barely fades at all in the 100 degree plus weather we have. Increases very fast.

| Wow, that is gorgeous, thanks for the picture and info Fairy, I appreciate it very much. And to think, I may have that growing in my gardens next year, it's just beautiful, pink flowers are my favorite. Sharon |

Here's my Daring Dilemma - just new last year and bloomed like crazy this year.

| Sharon, your here on the daylily forum so obviously interested in daylilies. What grows well for you now? Evergreens and semi evergreens or do you grow dormants there too in Southern LA? If your just getting started and not growing daylilies yet then a trip to that local dayliliy farm having the sales is deffinately in order. I am sure they can tell you what does well in your area. |

| ;o)~ My pleasure, I'll enable anytime! *EVIL GRIN* |
RE: I Am Excited

| Thanks daylily dreamer for posting DD, it is lovely. I love the color combination, that is why I want it. Rita, I have some daylilies, some are dormant, but have come back every year. I have some evergreens and semi evergreens too. They are mostly NOID's. The ones I am getting are from a daylily farm about 15 miles from me, so they should all grow here. This is a plunge I am taking bc I come here every day and drool over the pictures. I decided to start saving money to get me some more. I have never bought from a grower before, always just local nurseries. Here's a link to their site: http://www.eatel.net/~crochetgarden/ Sharon |

| The Crochets are great people. Clarence's 'King Kahuna' has been in close contention for the Stout Medal the last few years. I'm sure the plants you get will do fine, and I'm sure the Crochet's will be generous enablers - just like the evil grinning fairy! LOL, Ed |
RE: I Am Excited

| Thanks Ed, I am sure they can steer me in the right direction. And I do kinda have a green thumb, so I am confident that the ones I get will do good here. The Crochets do have some pretty daylilies. Sharon |
RE: I Am Excited

| I think you always will get better quality and selection from a grower than a local nursaery or big box store. But maybe you have farmers markets there on weekends. Sometimes there are vendors selling daylilies, just depends. Anyway, I am glad Ed knows this particur place, sounds like a good one. That sale price you mentioned is a great deal for those listed daylilies or just about any others. So now that you have been coming here and gotten the daylily bug like the rest of us, you will want to keep your new daylilies named so that they do not become NO IDs. Something I read somewhere for great plant label markers was the plastic knives sold at the grocery store. Just write the name on the flat part and stick other end in ground :-)) Something I do not know ANYTHING about is planting at this time of year in your zone. Must be plenty hot. I hope some of you more southern forum folks can go into that so that your new daylilies are a big success. |
RE: I Am Excited

| I am going to wait until the fall to get the daylilies. I think I could plant them now, with a good mulch and frequent watering they would make it. But I have to get a new bed made, or an existing one re made, either way I would wilt trying to do that right now, so fall it is. Thanks for the info Rita. I really admire everyones daylilies. Sharon |
RE: I Am Excited
| | |
| But is the daylily farm you plan to buy from still going to be running this sale in the fall? |
RE: I Am Excited
| | |
| I'm calling them tomorrow to see, if not I will wait till spring and see what they offer as a special. Sharon |
RE: I Am Excited
| | |
| I bet you can talk them into letting you buy those daylilies at the sale price and dig in the fall. After all a sale is a sale and having them actually leave in the fall shouldn't matter that much to them unless they want to clear them all out. |
RE: I Am Excited
| | |
| Probably so Rita, they just advertise it as their 2009 sale. I find out tomorrow. BTW, my real name is Rita Sharon, I was called Sharon instead of Rita. Sharon |
RE: I Am Excited
| | |
| Seems to be alot of Rita's popping up on this forum lately :-)) |
RE: I Am Excited
| | |
| Yes, it's a strong and good name. I always wanted to be called Rita, but Sharon it was, a 3rd cousin in the same small town named her daughter Rita, so to avoid confusion my parents called me Sharon. Sharon |

| Mr. Clarence (as he is called, apparently) is very well known in daylily circles. The last two conventions (the only ones I've been to...so far!)...he has told his famous jokes to a very appreciative audience. He seems like a delightful person. Definitely call ahead as he would be a wealth of information, someone you'd definitely like to talk daylilies with! In fact, I'd ask him for some of his recommendations...as he has lots of daylily experience (and undoubtedly great stories!). Don't forget the AHS National Convention will be in LA 2011... |
RE: I Am Excited

| Thanks for the info on Mr. Clarence and the Convention, that would be great to attend. Sharon |
RE: I Am Excited

| I am even more excited, I counted my piggy bank last night and I am half way there. I have a small jewelry order to make up when my pieces get here and that should put me right at what I need to get the 10 daylilies. Hooray!!!!!! Sharon |
RE: I Am Excited
| | |
| That sounds great Sharon. I know that we all enjoy our daylilies very much (or we wouldn't be here on this forum) but I think its most exciting when one first begins adding to the garden. Each year there is more and more to look forward to at bloom season. |
RE: I Am Excited

| Just reading through posts and saw the mention of Crochet Daylily Gardens. I hope you made it by to see Mr. Clarence. I always like visiting with him. I took my mother with me this spring. Of course, she had to get a "few" daylilies. |
RE: I Am Excited
| | |
| I haven't made it by there yet, hopefully this spring. I have to get some soil hauled in, I have plenty of daylilies to plant that were given to me by a very sweet daylily lover before I can even think of buying more. Do you live in Amelia, I have only been through there once. Sharon |
