Hosta in daylily garden

Not sure which topic it was I promised a picture of this "freed from OKC clay" hosta which is so happy here in Green Country, but you can see after only 3 summers here it is pushing everything out of its way! Probably will have to move Paranoid Lovesick out of its way this fall.

Does anyone recognize it so I can put a name on it? I thought it was Guacamole, but the leaves have no variegation and they are smooth.

It looks like Nigrescens Elator. A sport of Nigrescens.. It grows huge. Mine is approx 3 feet tall and probably 4 feet wide. I love it and share it often. The blooms look right and the bloom stalks get very tall. you may want to do a search on this particular one and see if it's the correct name....Ellie

That is a most interesting hosta, Ellie. I don't think it is the same as mine, though. In Oklahoma City it was just barely a one gallon size after more than five years. I moved it a couple times to see if I could get it into a happy spot. Well, it wanted a BIG move, out of OKC! Here for only the third season, it has come into its own. The leaves are smooth and clear green, no variegation.

NE is a smooth green with no variation in color. Not at all like it's parent. The leaves are ever so slightly oblong with a slight heart shape. Mine is many years old but yours will probably get larger also. Did you search for NE just to see it? Good luck...Ellie

I have Elatior too, mine was just sitting there for several years, finally this year it's nice and big, with very tall flower stalks.

Well that is a very interesting comparison Nat! Maybe the crowns had to mature. Do hosta have crowns? I don't know.

Elle, another reason I didn't think it was had to do with the smoothness of the leaves. The only photos I found online of the Nigrescens Elator showed it with rather crinkly leaves. I couldn't tell absolutely whether there was variation in color or not. Mine is solid one color and very smooth leaves with the exception of veining. In the photo it sure looks like there is more colors, but that is just the reflection of sunlight. A huge oak shades the garden in the morning and the house shades it in the afternoon. It gets hot noontime sun. I keep it well watered with a drip hose in the azalea raised bed against the house.

I'm rather surprised it has done so well because I'm sure it competes with the oak for moisture.

Judy Ann, I just went outside and took pics of my Elatior.
It's about 4-5 feet wide, and flower stalks are 5 feet (done blooming now)
