I hesitate to post on this since it brings out all the controversy with the DREADED subject of RUST but here goes.
Several months ago someone posted on here about Plant Wash and that it had cleared up their rust. Well some people blew it off but I decided to give it a try since the chemicals only seem to kinda knock it back instead of clearing it up until cold weather takes over. First off it isn't that expensive considering how much good chemicals cost for rust. A bottle of concentrate cost $50.00 including shipping. This will last awhile unless you have really big gardens. Anyway, I had moved a few I had rust on, mostly new arrivals, over to an isolated spot in the back yard. Mine are in pots so they were easy to move. I ordered the Plant Wash and started spraying on weekly intervals. I didn't add the cornmeal to the base of the plants as was recommended on the last post. One plant was really bad with rust all over it. I trimmed off the bad leaves and started spraying. Nothing but Plant Wash. I added plant food to the spray just to give them a little help. I used Messenger. Well I sprayed about 4 times at one or 2 week intervals. I did use a sticker solution, but don't know if it was necessary or not. As the plants grew out they looked better. I have been watching them closely. I see no rust now and haven't sprayed for at least a month maybe two, I'm thinking its been about 2 months. The one that was covered with rust seems to be clear now.
This is MY experience but I figured why not give it a try, it is organic and if it didn't work then, I at least gave it a shot. I will continue to watch these and am not going to spray unless I see some rust. So if some others would try this too then we could get an idea just how well it works. Thanks and good luck. Don't shoot the messenger, this is only my experience. Below is the place that sells it. Garden Choice Organics sells it.

Dot, I appreciate your post on your experience with this product. Could you tell me how much the quart sized bottle of concentrate makes? I have pretty extensive gardens but have only seen rust on a few of my new arrivals this year. Thanks, Jan |
RE: Plant Wash
| | |
| OK I'm thinking one quart is 32 ounces and it is one ounce per gallon to treat. So I would say one quart would equal 32 gallons of spray. I still have a lot left of it. Dot |

| The problem I have with this, is that you sprayed all the plants, not just a test plant. When I have a rusty plant, I can cut it back, move the pot to an isolated spot, and it will come back clean as a whistle, with no spraying of anything. So I would hesitate to state that all your spraying is what kept the rust from coming back. |

Dot, Thanks for reporting back to us about the Plant Wash. I just bought a quart and will let you know how it works for me. Kathy |

| I think I mis-understood that you cut back all the plants. If not then maybe it did indeed work. |

| I bought a bottle not long after the original post on it. It's still sitting unopened in the garage, but may be time to give it a shot as several of my plants have shown significant signs of rust. I started spraying several weeks ago using my usual regimen of chemicals. So I guess I'll go ahead and give the wash a trial run here in my garden.....can't hurt. Linda |
RE:2 Plant Wash

| I never had ANY luck with just cutting them back. I tried that all last summer, when we had rain all summer almost. I used expensive chemicals last year and it only seemed to kinda keep it in control. I cut the one plant back severely that had it and the others I just pinched off whatever leaves I saw it on not the whole plant. I sprayed them all because I wanted to be rid of it, not just do a test. Some may not have been rust but if it even vagely looked like it I sprayed it. Anyone can try whatever works best for them. I do not want to get into a big debate like this subject usually causes, just report my experience with it in case someone else wants to try it. It is organic so its not going to hurt anything at least. I hate spraying in this heat so for now I'm not and just watching them. I will keep people updated on "my" experience. Dot |
RE: Plant Wash

| Is it an insectacide also? I went and looked because I was curious (no rust here) and it said it also protected against damaging insects. I am wondering if that means it has something to kill inscects or it means it makes the plant so healthy that it resists the damage of inscects like that. Have you seens any difference in the thrips damage department? |
RE:3 Plant Wash
| | |
| Since I didn't spray the flowers or buds, just the foliage, I don't know about it being an insecticide. I really wasn't watching for anything except rust LOL, sorry. I don't remember the flowers being blotched on those plants just some of my others. The thrips were bad this year on my darker flowers. Next year I will look at that if I have to use it, but getting new plants in every year I will probably have to use it. Dot |

| Well, I think its good that you reported on your experience with this product. It looks to me that the idea of the product is the make plants healther, therefore they can better resist whatever come their way. I would say your experience with the rust being gone is a very good sign. |

We don't have rust problems but I guess its always good to have some on hand for "just in case". Does it say how long the product will remain usable before it loses its effectiveness? Would a better preventive measure be to soak the dls in fungicide before planting in the garden or is there some other recommendations for preventing the disease besides spraying with Plant Wash? Julia |
RE: Plant Wash

| Julia, to my understanding, conventional wisdom says there is nothing that cures Rust. That being said, I did the same thing as ladylovingdove. I live probably 30-40 miles east of her. I only had one affected plant, but sprayed everything with the stuff just in case. I did not use the cornmeal or anything else other than epsom salts. I have not seen a single rust spore since, and I only sprayed once in mid Spring. I'll probably do another in the fall and continue on that way just to keep my peace of mind. |

| I'm glad other people are trying it and having good luck. I decided I will spray again just to make sure because this is the time of year it will certainly show up. I'm very happy that this works at least as good as costly chemicals. For people with large gardens this would certainly help, at least it can be an alternative to try. And for people with pets this is organic. I have many new ones coming this fall and I also intend to soak them before planting. Dot |

| Thanks for bumping this up Rita, as this was before I was reading these posts. I do not have any rust, and it would be nice to say I wouldn't...but I am just "down the road West" from Dot, so it could very well happen sometime. I really like it that someone posted about an organic spray that works for the rust, if need be, and also where to get it. Thanks for the info and your experience, DOT, and Rita for making it available to the newer people on the forum. Jan G. |

| Thanks for bumping this up! I didn't see Dot's original post. I certainly want to give this product a try. Debra |
RE: Plant Wash

| I don't see why it would not help. If you can make any plant stronger and healthier it makes common sense that it could more easily resist deaseases. Just my thought. |

| Plant Wash is also available in Houston from Nitro-Phos 2600 Callie (tel: 713-228-1868) In their 2008 catalog, prices are listed as $6.12 ea for the 32 oz spray bottle, and $16.68 for the 32 oz. concentrate. I haven't tried it yet. I've used one application of Nickel Plus combined with Kphite (both at double strength) and haven't seen any rust on new growth. Nancy |

| I do have rust again mostly on ones that I wasn't spraying much this summer, located in one area. I guess once you have it it is hard to totally eradicate it. The ones that I sprayed regularly that I had seen it on earlier look pretty good now with a just little recurring. Just trying to be honest here. It just seemed to pop up all of a sudden. I am spraying again now and using chemicals AND Plant Wash together. They look much better now. This winter I will again trim all back and spray during the winter with the Plant Wash. With new ones always arriving all the time it is really hard to tell where it comes from, SIGH. Good luck everyone and keep posting. Dot |

| Fall here in Texas is the worst time for rust, since the nights get cool and the days are warm. There is so much dew every morning, I think that's what causes rust to proliferate. I do have a raised bed, which is about 30" off the ground, and have never seen a sign of rust in it. I also have some diploids planted 8' apart, and haven't seen any rust on them, either. Nancy |

| Bumping this one up..........anyone have any new success or tried new procedures or found any new products for controlling rust? Ladylovingdove, what has been your experience this year with Plantwash. Are you still using it? What are the rest of you using? |
RE: Plant Wash

| Bump. Dot are you using the plant wash this year? Any more info? anybody? |
RE: Plant Wash

| I haven't used the Plant Wash this year. We were spraying on a regular basis all spring, alternating Heritage with Strike 50. So far this year, I haven't seen any rust. We haven't been spraying in the summer, it has been so hot and dry here now. I will start again in the fall, that is when I had it the worst last year. Is it gone, I doubt it. Dot |
