At last - we have lift off

Getting some new beds ready for next year is a lot of work, especially in the relentless Florida Sun. We spend a couple of hours in the early morning and a couple of hours in the evening (when it doesn't rain) working away.

The tall variegated plant in front is Hibiscus Snow Queen. Planted in April of this year.

As of 7:30 PM today, phase one of the sprinkler are in place and working. We'll start planting Friday and Saturday.

How fun to have that blank canvas in which to plant. How many daylilies are going in the bed?

The old daylily beds contain some 300 plants from 150 cultivars.

Yes, the area was just grass, and not even nice lawn grass at that. We live on a large (for Florida) hill, which is little more than a huge pile of what we call sugar sand. It's ideal for citrus, which is what my late father grew until the freezes of '83 and '84 wiped them out. To grow flowers and ornamentals, or for that matter, lawn grass, the soil must be supplemented. Hence the huge pile of Black Kow composted cow manure
