differences in how foliage holds up?

I have a lot of daylilies but am not as knowledgeable as more of you - I have bought them from a variety of growers and love exploring new ones.

I notice that some clumps develop a LOT of dead leaves even while plant is blooming and some not so much or not at all. I am just looking for advice about either making choices which include foliage staying green or maybe I need to water more?

I do know that when I let a clump get too large I particularly have this trouble, but in some cases it happens to a clump that seems a reasonable size.

My "Happy Returns" and "Rosy Returns" - both of which I love in other ways - are examples of ones with a lot of foliage dying and I am continually grooming them as they are in prominent spots - and it's a pain!

advice welcome!
