I am thinking, thrips? I know I had quite a few do that this year because I had no time to spray and had thrip damage on some, especially the darks. Some blooms were damaged while others opened up perfectly.

Could well be. I looked closer and on some flowers there are tiny elongated black bugs, more on yellow plants than on others. Is that them? Seems some plants are more susceptible than others.
