Black Fathom Depths - Zone 6 or lower?

I'd like to get this one next spring but first wanted to get some feedback from forum members as to your personal experience with growing it in your garden. I'm in a zone 5/6.

Does it open on cooler mornings? Does it act more like a SEV vs EV? Any other information you could share would be helpful.

Thanks
Julia

Julia,
Hopefully you will get answers from your zones, but I wanted to tell you about mine. We had a very unusual cooler snap during my early daylily season.. Quite a few of mine did not open well in the cool morning. Dark Fathom Depths was unaffected and opened as usual...fully, early and beautiful.

I can't comment on the EV vs SEV since all of my foliage generally dies to the ground in the winter.

I hope the feedback from your zone is good.

I had to jump in here real quick,Julia, cause I LOVE it, I'm in zone 5. I got it off the auction last spring, so it survived last year's harsh winter. Now, I have two double fans, of it, both winnings from the auction! One set is growing in the pot ghetto, and here is it's pic. It was a blooming machine., don't have bud count, sorry ,

It also bloomed in the pot earlier than the other double fan that is in a garden bed. The double fan in the garden bed also bloomed, it did bloom last summer too, very late, This year it bloomed mid July, and sent up only one scape, HOWEVER, I just went out and checked, I have 7 fans in the garden where I only planted 2 fans, last spring, so it was very busy!! It opened well all summer, regardless of temps. I say go for it!! The foliage of the one in the garden acted dormant, if I recall correctly.

Kay: Thanks for the info on the cool morning opening. It was your pic that sold me on putting it at the top of my list.
Cindy: Gorgeous photo too. I'm sold.

Thanks for the information.I appreciate the feedback.

Now to see if I can find some pricing on it and get a sense of what the going rate is. I don't want it till next spring but better to be prepared.

Well you know it is a winner when it a bloom machine for Cindy and for me and we are three zones apart. It is one I would not be without it. An early and vigorous bloomer.

It was also a fabulous performer in my garden. In just its second year it increased to 6 fans and they all put up scapes. The bud count was 46!

Val: Thank you for the feedback. 46 buds WOW. I went here on GW and did a search and your photo came up. Beautiful, just like Kay's and Cindy's.

Another question:
I saw someone on the auction listed this plant but in the description part they said it makes small to medium size fans.
Can any of you who grow it tell me how your fans look to you? How would you compare the fan size to some of your other daylilies? I am a bit puzzled by the sellers comment.

Thanks again.

Had to pull this back up to talk about fan size. I have seen that on seller's info too, that the daylily makes small fans, and I always wondered exactly what did they mean by that?? I don't recall the fans being puny or anything like that. It is a smaller bloom, so I do have it in the front of the bed that it is in. I went out and took a pic of the fans, using a golf tee as a reference point. yea, they are small, but also, they were somewhat larger during the bloom season. Several, actually most, of my daylilies seem to start to shrink in fan size during the fall, and after they have bloomed. Here is the pic.

Thanks Cindy. Appreciate the comparison pic. I'm still sold on it so will wait till spring to see who is selling.
