I like the edge color on Hot Lava!! What is that little guy, a locust?

RE: Here's Hot Lava and a rose

Thanks Cindy. The daylilies will be a thing of the past if we get the freeze we are supposed to get later this week. It probably (hopefully) won't do the roses in, however.

The rose garden I planted the last two years is growing very nicely now.

CTC, it is a silly grasshopper. I have had a lot of the big black and yellow ones that I chase down and grind into the grass. I couldn't find the green one when I knocked it off of the daylily.

Lovely roses as usual. If it is a short freeze the roses might be ok, it takes some real cold to do them in. I have had blooms in December some years.

Hot Lava is a pretty one, I do like that burnt sienna coloring. I always love Man Of Sorrows.

The insect is a katydid actually. Not much different from a grasshopper though. You can grab it by the wings or back knees, but if you grab it in a way where it can get its jaws on you, it will bite! I've never had a grasshopper try to bite me.

It's always a treat to see daylily blooms in October! The coloration on 'Hot Lava' is perfect for Fall. I have Abraham Darby and Glamis Castle too. 'Man of Sorrows' looks like a pretty one. Thanks for sharing these with us!

Thanks Rita, I hope the roses make it through. and it would be nice if it isn't a hard freeze even though the daylilies wouldn't like any freeze. I did have roses in December last year, and several of the newer bushes are fairly covered in buds. (Belinda's Dream and Souvenir de Malmaison...also, Sombreuil is blooming nicely. I think I wwill cover Blueberry Breakfast since it has a couple of good bloom spikes.

Jean, I know you have grown roses for years, and I appreciate your comments about them. I planted Paul Neyron and Maggie Friday. They are two gallon bushes from Antique Rose Emporium.

Thank you Linda. I have big plans for next year's roses...in fact for the entire garden. We'll see how that goes.

Nate a Katydid huh? Well, if it bites, I'm glad I knocked it off...I call that adding insult to injury! Get on a prized plant then bite me when I object! The nerve!

Thank you, Celeste, Man of Sorrows is a Karol Emmerich plant, and her reds and pinks and purples are hard to beat. I now have six Austins. Glamis Castle, Jude the Obscure, and both of these are pretty good bloomers this first year. Abraham Darby, a fantastic bloomer. William Shakespear...more of a grower this first year, but an awful lot of growth...I have him on the fence and he is hogging it. His blooms are lovely though. Katherine Morley. She has a much more upright growth so far than the other Austins, and the one bloom I've gotten was lovely.

I have added Golden Celebration with is so new it isn't planted yet, so no comments on it. I'm sure I will add others though.

Thanks Kay!! They are all beautiful. I got Hot Lava too. I know it will improve by next summer. I didn't even look to see which ones have scapes because I don't think they will make blooms before we get a freeze either. It's supposed to be in low 30 here this week also.

I've got Vienna Waltz that's bloomed 4 buds so far. I'd guess I have maybe 6 more scapes that I saw last week on some of the other Maryotts that I planted in early September.

Your roses are so pretty. I always enjoy your photos because of the roses. I love the daylilies, but I can't grow roses and yours always are so lovely.

Thanks and many blessings to all, Mona

RE: Here's Hot Lava and a rose

Kay, I used to have WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE 2000 and just loved that the rose. The first two years it bloomed like crazy with those gorgous big stunner blooms. After that it really showed major RMV and blooms got sparce and the leaves looked aweful. I ended up shovel prunning it and just never got another. I really should get another.

I had GOLDEN CELEBRATION for a while also. Lovely rose and the spring flush was awesome. It was just covered in blooms. But like many Austins the blooms blew in three days and just don't last. In fact that is my big gripe about many Austins, the blooms blow quickly. Plus GOLDEN CELEBRATION loves to grow and wanted to get big. It likes to sprawl. It just didn't fit in my garden the way I grow my roses. I replaced it with GOLDEN ZEST a Jackon and Perkins rose that behaves itself and doesan't need to grow as large. Plus it has similiar coloring and the old fashioned bloom form just as GOLDEN CELEBRATION does.

RE: Here's Hot Lava and a rose

I really like Man of Sorrows, & Hot Lava looks really hot. Did I tell you I have a scape on my Hot Lava? Possibility of frost here Wed though, so it may not happen. Just found the scape last week, so if it does bloom, it is going to have to rush.
I really like the buds on Honor, if they look like that for a long time, I'd be pleased I think :)

RE: Here's Hot Lava and a rose

If any daylilies tried to put up scapes here they would quickly turn much too cold. Althought it was nice today, sunny, maybe mid sixties.

RE: Here's Hot Lava and a rose

It got to 89 here today, but is suppose to turn cold for a few nights snd 60's daytime temps
I found 2 more scapes today, too, plus one a few days ago. hot lava has a scape and found one on NEW PARADIEM and one on CHORAL FANTASY. today.I am hoping the weather man is wrong this time.
