daylilies in buckets.

Good evening. This is my first post, and I'm glad I found all of you! My problem is trying to grow 11 daylilies (all variants of the "stella" family) in 5-gallon buckets. I'm doing this to put them inside a 9x17 fenced cage to keep the deer out.(I live at Deer Central. Traffic is heavy.) The 5-gallon buckets are the only containers I have.I want to use buckets to have the ability to move the daylilies as well as the other plants inside this cage around as I see fit, whenever I see fit. What I don't know is whether to put the buckets all the way into the ground, leave 2 to 4 inches sticking out, leave half out, or set the buckets on top of the ground. If I could, I'd like to leave as little of the rim sticking out as I could, and I have catmint or sedum spurium Elizabeth to plant as a camoflage for appearances' sake Drainage might also be a problem. My back yard is clay fill dirt. Thx for any advice you can give me! :) Jim
