Electric fencing for deer?

The first few years we lived here, we had lush, beautiful veggie gardens. Then, apparently, word got around in the deer community and they discovered our lush, beautiful veggie gardens. They have been ravaging them every summer since. And we've tried just about everything, including human hair and urine and store-bought stuff. DH is about ready to throw in the towel, but he says he may try one more thing: an electric fence.

He tells me it will not harm the deer, just give them a slight jolt. But the whole concept just bothers me. Anybody else use an electric fence, and are they as "harmless" as DH says they are? AND do they work to repel the deer?

Try just making a taller fence. This can be used to grow lots of fun vegie or flowering vines as well. I'm not an expert on electic fences, but the deer don't have them in nature and they cannot like them. If you are going to the trouble with an electric fence you could just make a fence that is a few feet taller. My friends that live in an area known for having many, many deer have a fence that is not electric and no deer get in their yard. I dont remember exactly how high it was, but it was surprisingly low. It was not taller than me, I know that.

Years ago we had a horse pasture with a pond in it . The horses were kept in by electric fence but three or four times a year, the deer broke or pushed down the fence and let the horses escape.
The poles and wires were pushed in, not out and the horses always stayed clear of the fence unless we forgot to turn it on. ( How the horses could tell the fence was off I never did figure out)
Electric fence is not very visible especially at night. Hanging things from it might help but would look tackey.
The Invisible deer fence for 3 acres would have me working overtime to pay for it. I'm looking for a big dog LOL

Last summer we had an electric fence for the first time around our garden and it worked for us. No deer problems at all. Before we installed the fence the deer would actually bed down next to our garden and use it for their own private buffet! The fence was about 3' high and had 3 strands, each about a foot apart. I hope it works for you!
