Deer resistant ground cover under Tri-color Beech

DH would like for me to create a few new planting beds in order to cut down on mowing. One of the proposed beds would have a Yoshino cherry on one end and a Tri-color Beech on the other. These are mature trees and are closer together than I'd like, but they're both so beautiful.

I'm not sure what would be a good groundcover that won't compete with the beautuful foilage of the Tri-color Beech in the summer months? We'll probably create the bed over the spring/summer and plant in late summer/fall. I'm hoping to underplant the entire area with early spring blooming bulbs.

Also, the ground cover *must* be deer resistant.

Any suggestions? Thanks!
