 o
Yews & Deer

Posted by lahtay z5NH (My Page) on

In the last couple of weeks, deer have
defoliated a large yew in my front garden.
Will this shrub "come back" this spring
and summer or will I have to remove it?

Try a shrub from this list

Here is a link that might be useful: Rutgers deer list

we have many mushroom shaped yews in our area because the deer tend to nibble at a certain height. they generally look tired and terrible after a few years, we removed ours when we moved in. if you like mushroom shaped yews, then keep it. otherwise, i suggest you get japanese yew, which the deer reputedly avoid.

dears love yew so much that in areas where deer are concentrated, wild yews only grow on steep cliffs unaccessible to deer (where they occur at all)

I wish deer would come eat the 25-year-old yews planted by a previous owner of my house.
