plants for wet clay soil

asimon

Our yard is dominantly composed of clay that is great at water retention. There is one area where water pools (an inch of so deep in patches) for one to two days after an average rain. The area receives morning sun, but is shaded the remainder of the day. What can we plant in this area? We're hoping for plants to need a lot of water and will help dry out the area. Are ferns a good idea? If so, any specific types?
