Shrub for shade in a sunny area

I have one spot on the south side of my house where I cannot get anything to survive. The spot in the garden is a corner where it meets a 6' privacy fence. While it starts off with full, hot sun, once it hits about 11:00am, the shadow takes over and the spot is shady for the rest of the day. I'm looking for something that either flowers or has attractive foliage, and serves as an anchor for the planting bed. I'd like to stay under 2' wide due to space restrictions, so no azaleas or rhodes. I thought about the dwarf varieties of each, but I don't think they would get tall enough to make a good corner presence. I tried a cone shaped confier, but it doesn't fit into the scheme of roses, salvia, and daisies. Is there anything that likes about 4 hours of morning sun, then all shade, grows tall but not too wide? I'm in a coastal area. Maybe some type of grass? Is there a climbing rose that could handle that situation? I have several others along the same fence in the all sun areas.
