big deer problem and planting japanese maples

anyone have stories to tell about how their japanese maple do with deer?

i just got a sango kaku (coral bark) maple and noticed there are none in our area... not a good sign. :p also considering a red or green fernleaf japanese maple for a place right by the deer path. want to know before i buy that one since it will be more expensive than the sango kaku..

thanks!

They don't bother mine, but they are fickle eaters -if it's expensive, buy a $9 bottle of "Tree Guard" and spray - it will last all season.

We have 10 japanese maples, and deer and elk all over the place, but they have never been chewed on. We used to have a goat (same animal family, ruminant) and she chewed on all sorts of things, but never the japanese maples.

oh thank you guys! that gives me some confidence that japanese maples aren't a deer treat. doesn't matter if they occasionally chew at it... but definitely does not seem like if they did, they'd think "oooooo this is yummy, i'll have to have this course 3 times a week!"

that was exactly what happened to my pussy willow..

Dont' mean to be bummer, but deer just savaged one of my japanese maples. I'm in New York - suprised you didn't hear me bellowing when I discovered it!!

hi, sorry to hear that! maybe yours was an old post and i just didn't find it. but that's awful! do you think yours will recover? which variety was it??

well i sort of heard the same story from my local nursery.. that in _some_ areas, the deer have been eating japanese maple as well. so i took a precaution and sprayed mine with a deer solution. so far the deer have been through my yard several times (found fresh tracks this morning) and haven't touched it (they nibbled at my japanese irises though).

but good thing you posted your warning on this thread. i'm just going to keep up that extra precaution! my DH just LOVES the japanese maple (we got one called "waterfall")..

Hi, I live in northern NJ and we have a BIG deer problem. It's hard to plant anything other than grey-blue foliage. One thing I have noticed is that if you plant lavendar around your Japanese maples, they will usually leave it alone. Not always, however. I occasionally find a deer that will park itself next to my porch and eat the maple from behind the lavendar. I guess I need to plant it all around.

hi lorraine,
i read about placing scent barriers to deter deer, and it worked really well this year for me too! planting annuals like marigolds can also do the work of lavender. although right after i dug up and threw them out earlier this month, the deer came by to have a feast with my clematis.

but thank goodness the deer haven't developed a taste for my japanese maples yet!

I'm also in NY, and while Japanese maples aren't the deer's favorite food, they will definitely eat them, especially new growth, or in winter when they've got little else to eat.

They've left my japanese maple alone. There were some indian hawthorne right next to it that they ate to the branches, but they have never eaten the maple. It may help that the japanese maple has no leaves in the winter when the deer are hungriest.

here in colorado they leave most garden things alone except strawberrys... they love strawberrys. When the snow flies here they begin to downgrade, i would honestly say i've seen them chew on just about everything so you may have to spray spray spray or do like me, fence, fence.. fence.. what an expense. I like deer but I hate them... ya know?

I'm going to be planting blueberries soon (in large containers), is there anything I can plant with them - that will like the acidity they require - that deer hate? We have SWARMS of deer around here, no need to look for tracks, they're out in the open 24/7!!!

Thanks!
