Deer eating my plants - lorapetalum & indian hawthorns

The deer have had a great buffet on our lorapetalum and indian hawthorn shrubs this winter. Some of the plants are in pretty bad shape while others were not touched. I don't want to spray deer resistant chemicals or hang soap - rather I was curious to find out if I could plant other plants around the lorapetalum and indian hawthorns to mask these plants.

Has anyone done this? If so, what plants have you used to help throw off their appetite on the tasty plants? Any other ideas would greatly be appreciated!
