Save this clematis

Hello Gardeners

We moved into this house about three years ago. It seems the former owners had a big healthy clematis growing up the porch railing.

For the past two years I've tried to dig out the clematis to the root so that I could transplant it. Each time it broke off or didn't come out with the whole root. No more shoots came up.

I assumed it died.

But it didn't die. Each year it comes back and as a matter of fact this year it's stronger than ever and with additional shoots (more plants?)

I really want to save this plant (I love a fighter) but DH doesn't like things climbing on the porch. Considering how many other things he puts up with, I want to move the clematis once and for all.

How deep does this thing go??? Do I need to rip out the whole front garden?

Any help you can give me will be appreciated.
