Plants for Difficult Places

Plants/Groundcovers for under the eaves

We do not have a raingutter, so the water drips off of the eaves of the roof all around the house - leaving a small, shallow trench-like depression.

What would be good to plant there - that would withstand the rain and snow falling off and help to prevent erosion?

My parents have pachysandra (sp?) planted under the eaves of their pole building and it holds up great. It's not the showiest of ground covers but I'm thinking of trying it myself. I have seen a variegated variety that might add a little more interest.

I think that Pachysandra is really quite attractive, and I wouldn't mind growing it, but I always understood that it likes shade and acid soil. How well would it do in soil that has a PH of between 7 and 8?

The area that I'm the most concerned about right now is also on the south side of the house - full sun. The north side has some very soggy grass right now. We'll see how well that really works out.
